Living in Montenegro

This is not “travelling for longer”. The right questions to ask before a project.

The country can be appealing for everyday life, but housing, residency, healthcare, taxation and seasonality call for a more rigorous approach than a tourist guide. This page offers pointers for preparing the right questions, not legal answers.

Choosing a base

Podgorica has more services and year-round life. The Bay of Kotor offers a spectacular setting, but can suffer from seasonality, traffic and high prices. Bar combines coast, transport links and a more permanent way of life. The north suits those who accept a harsher climate and a more limited range of services.

Test before deciding

A month out of season often teaches you more than a summer stay: damp, heating, traffic, which shops are open, neighbours and access to healthcare all become real.

Residency and taxation

The rules on long stays, residency and taxation depend on personal circumstances. They change and are worth checking with the Montenegrin authorities and, if necessary, with a qualified professional. This site does not provide legal, tax or immigration advice.

What to check before starting a project

  • Residency status and the documents required.
  • Health cover and insurance.
  • Taxation in France and in Montenegro.
  • The real quality of the housing in winter.
  • Internet connection and services available year-round.
  • Getting around without a car, depending on the town chosen.
