Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa to go to Montenegro?
No, not for a stay of under 90 days with a valid passport. A valid national identity card is enough for a stay of under 30 days.
What currency is used?
The euro, although Montenegro is not part of the eurozone. Cards are accepted in tourist areas; keep some cash for Perast and small shops.
How many days do you need for Montenegro?
Seven days are enough to see the bay, Lake Skadar and Durmitor. For a slower trip, three or four nights in the bay are enough.
What is the best time to go?
June and September. May suits the coast and the lake; the mountains are passable from late June to September.
Do I need to rent a car?
For the Bay of Kotor alone, no: buses and taxis are enough. For Lovćen, Skadar and Durmitor, yes. The average price recorded in October 2026 is about €26 a day.
Are there direct flights from France?
Yes: Transavia to Tivat (from Paris-Orly) and Wizz Air to Podgorica (from Paris-Beauvais), depending on the season. From elsewhere in France, you need to connect through a hub.
Will my phone work as it does in the EU?
Not quite: EU roaming rules do not currently apply to Montenegro. Check your operator’s rates or buy a local SIM.
What is the best time to climb the Kotor city walls?
At opening time, around 8 am (7 am from May to September). Avoid 10 am to 3 pm in summer: the path has no shade.
How much does entry to the national parks cost?
Durmitor €5, Skadar €5, Biogradska €4, Lovćen €3 per person per day (2026 prices). An annual pass at €13.50 covers all five parks.
What should I do in an emergency?
Call 112. Police: 122, fire brigade: 123, ambulance: 124. Health and repatriation insurance is strongly recommended.
What does “Crna Gora” mean?
It is Montenegro’s name in Montenegrin: “black mountain”, also written Црна Гора in the Cyrillic alphabet.
Is this site official?
No. It is an independent editorial guide, with no connection to any government body, tourist office or travel agency.
