Choosing your stops

A tiny country on the map, much bigger in feel. Two or three areas are enough.

The classic mistake is trying to see everything. Montenegro looks quick to cross on a map and is much slower in reality: a few dozen kilometres can change the atmosphere completely, and the roads are slow. A good trip means choosing two or three “Montenegros”.

What about the Budva coast?

Budva and its coastline have the beaches, the entertainment and the nightlife, with a high density of tourists in peak season. It is the right choice for a beach holiday; combine it with Cetinje for a complete change of pace. This guide focuses on places to visit rather than resorts.

When to go?

The best compromise is late June to September, with a preference for June and September. The coast is overcrowded in July and August, and the mountains have their own calendar. The month-by-month detail is on the When to go page.
