Montenegro: where to go, how long to stay, what it costs. Detailed guides, dated prices and sources.

Three Montenegros
The country looks quick to cross on a map and is much slower in reality. A few dozen kilometres change the atmosphere, and the roads are slow: it is better to choose two or three areas.

A fortified town, 1,350 steps up to the fortress, an island village and winding roads on the water.

- When April-June, September-October

The massif and the lakeLovćen, Cetinje, Skadar
Njegoš’s mausoleum at 1,657 m, the former royal capital and the largest lake in the Balkans.
- Time 1 to 2 days
- Base Cetinje, Virpazar
- When June, September, spring

The mountainsDurmitor, Biogradska
Glacial lakes, peaks at 2,500 m, the Tara Canyon and primeval forest.
- Time 2 to 3 nights
- Base Žabljak, Kolašin
- When late June to September
What is where
A small country: most sites are less than three hours apart by road, but the roads are slow and winding. The 7-day itinerary links the bay, the lake and the high mountains without doubling back.
- Stop
- Other landmark
- Return airport
- Route (schematic, not the road)
Schematic map, not to scale.

Do I need to rent a car?
For the Bay of Kotor alone, no. For Lovćen, Skadar and Durmitor, yes (about €26 a day on average).
When should I go?
June and September: pleasant temperatures, fewer people, passable trails.
Are there direct flights from France?
Yes, from Paris: Transavia to Tivat, Wizz Air to Podgorica, depending on the season.
