Lake Skadar

A lake shared with Albania, water lilies, pelicans and a welcome breather between the coast and the mountains.

Lake Skadar, shared with Albania, is the largest lake in the Balkans. On the Montenegrin side it is protected as a national park: flat, reed-covered shores, water lilies, fishing villages, vineyard-covered hills and island monasteries. It is also a bird reserve, notably home to colonies of Dalmatian pelicans.

The cruise on the lake

The classic outing from Virpazar lasts about three hours: sailing among the water lilies, birdwatching, swimming if you like, then a visit to Kom Monastery (16th century) with a tasting of local wine and priganice, traditional doughnuts. The guided trip surveyed for this guide includes an English-speaking guide, drinks, safety equipment and the monastery entrance fee.

  • Park entrance: €5 per person, compulsory, free for children up to 14 according to the operator consulted (rules vary from park to park).
  • Meeting point: arrive 30 minutes beforehand. Transport and parking are not included.
  • Boat price: varies by operator and group size, not reliably recorded for this guide. Compare on site outside high season.

Season. Spring and autumn are the best times: mild temperatures, more active wildlife. Summer is busier and the water level can be lower.

One night or one day?

One day is enough for a first glimpse, ideally between the coast and the interior. A night changes the pace: an earlier start on the lake, dinner on the spot and less pressure to get to the next stop. Skadar makes an excellent stopover between the Bay of Kotor and Durmitor.

Driving

Some scenic roads around the lake are narrow. The beauty of the drive can become a constraint if you plan on an unrealistic average speed. It is better to cover few kilometres and take real breaks.

Without a car, the Podgorica – Bar railway line serves Virpazar (check timetables before you set out).
