Biogradska Gora and Kolašin

A primeval forest, a glacial lake and a flat 3.5 km loop: the gentlest complement to Durmitor.

Fifteen minutes from Kolašin, Biogradska Gora National Park protects one of the last primeval forests in Europe: beech, fir and spruce, some of the trees more than 500 years old. Created in 1952, the park covers about 5,400 hectares around the glacial Biogradsko Lake. It is a perfect complement to Durmitor, gentler and more wooded.

What to do there

  • The lake loop: 3.5 km, flat, suitable for families. In season, you can rent small rowing boats and picnic in designated areas.
  • Moderate hikes: to the Bendovac viewpoint and the katun (summer pasture hamlet) of Goleš.
  • Difficult treks: several hours to peaks such as Zekova Glava.

According to the guides consulted, the wildlife includes more than 200 bird species, many butterflies and large mammals (brown bear, deer, fox), which are rarely seen during the day.

Getting there and when to go

  • Kolašin: about 15 minutes by car, the logical base for sleeping.
  • Entrance: €4 per person (2026 survey, to be confirmed on the official parks website).
  • Season: spring to autumn. From December to March the park is generally closed to visitors, but you can walk from the entrance to the lake.
  • Camping: allowed in designated areas.

Caution. Mobile coverage is absent in places: bring a map or an offline GPS. For advanced routes, hire a local guide.
